According to RESNET, as they interviewed builders for their HERS-spotlight each month, they found that featuring the use of the HERS Index Score by comparing it to a car’s MPG, helped consumers better understand the energy costs of a home.  This allows the home buyer to better understand the home’s projected energy performance.  It’s something tangible, and helps them compare the expected energy usage of the different homes they’re looking at.

Many times a home buyer doesn’t understand all the house science being thrown at them, the things being done with their home to make it a better-built home.  The HERS rating is something people can relate to and understand.  The builders also agree on why consumers should ask for and expect HERS-rated homes: Because they must consider the total cost of a home, want to save on those monthly costs, and should expect their homes to be efficient, and healthy.

When asked why the builder choose to sell HERS-rated homes, most of the spotlighted builders noted that it was the third-party verification of their work.  Using a certified 3rd party Rater like Energy Rated Homes of Utah, brings validity to the quality brand.  A buyer can say all sorts of things, but the 3rd party verification of a HERS rating agrees with what they say.

One thing all the builders RESNET interviewed agreed on was that once their customers understand HERS, they appreciate the transparency and peace of mind the HERS Index Score provides.
